There
seems to be a fervent desire by our president to advance the cause
of democracy throughout the world.
Yet, how many realize that our nation was founded as a republic:
not a democracy?
What is a republic? How does it differ from a democracy? I ask
this because history tells us that few democracies last more than
200 years. Our nation has existed for about 230 years. Does this
mean anything for the United States?
I have a 1946 Webster Collegiate Dictionary
that I find totally fascinating, when reading the meaning of the
words between its covers.
Webster defines a republic
as: "A commonwealth, a state in which the
sovereign power resides in a certain body of the people (the electorate),
and is
exercised by representatives elected by, and responsible
to them: also, the form or government of such a state.
."
Webster's description of a democracy? "1. Government
by the people; government in which the supreme power is retained
by the people and exercised either directly (absolute, or pure,
democracy) or indirectly (representative democracy) through a
system of representation. 2. A community, or state so governed.
3. U.S. the principles and policy of the Democratic Party: also
that party, or its members. 4. Belief in a practice of social
equality: absence of snobbery."
Although the nation was founded as a republic, within 50 years
the seeds of democracy were already becoming the power behind
the government.
In Revelation 19, referring to the
return of Christ to the earth, it states in v.
16 "And he hath on his vesture, and on his thigh a
name written" King of Kings, and Lord of Lords."
We read of this same Jesus in Rev. 17:14
"These (the beast) shall make war with the lamb, and the
lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of Lords and
King of Kings.
The United States was born out of a government ruled by the King
of England. Such a government is called a monarchy, which Webster
defines as "1. Sovereignty of a single person. 2. A state
ruled over by a monarch: also' the rule exercised by such a person.
A monarchy is called an absolute monarchy when there are no constitutional
limitations on the monarchs power; A limited, or constitutional
monarchy, when there are such limitations (an example being as
in Great Britain which has a king/queen and a Parliament). 3.
Government in which a single person is sovereign."
If I read Revelation correctly, Jesus will be King of Kings and
Lord of Lords which means He will be King as well as High Priest
(in this case after the order of Melchisidek).
This in modern terms is a "Theocracy" and Webster
defines a theocracy as: "Government of a state
by the immediate direction of God' hence a government by priests
or ministers as representatives of God."
In the book of Exodus in the Old
Testament, we read of a theocracy that the Lord God Jehovah
(Yaweh) intended to incorporate into the world through the 12
tribes of Israel (Jacob).
Exodus 19: "In the third month,
when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of
Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai (referring
to the day of the week). V. 3 And
Moses went up unto God and the Lord called unto him out of the
mountain, Saying, Thou shalt thus say to the House of Jacob and
tell the children of Israel. V. 4 Ye
have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on
eagles wings and brought you unto myself.
V. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed and
keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar (particular) treasure
unto me above all people. (This is not just one tribe Judah, but
all 12 tribes of Israel). For all the earth is mine. V.6
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests and an holy nation.
These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of
Israel.
In the New Testament, we read in I Peter
2:5 "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual
house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable
to God by Jesus Christ. V. 9 But
ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation,
a peculiar (particular) people; that ye should show forth the
praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous
light: v. 10- Which in times past
were not a people, but are now the people of God; which had not
obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."
Perhaps our president who affirms to be a Christian, should be
promoting this soon coming Kingdom of God, rather than democracy,
that history has proven, can be fleeting and of short duration.
Perhaps he should rather be quoting Revelation
1:5-8 to the nations of the world. Rev.
1:5- "And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness,
and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings
of the earth, unto him who loved us and washed us from our sins
in His own blood. V.6 And hath made
us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory
and dominion forever and forever. Amen."
Perhaps, now we can see what King of Kings and Lord of Lords means.
While democracy may look like the answer, it would appear that
the world should be preparing for a pure government, a theocracy,
the Kingdom of God on earth.
If history stands, will the existence of the United states continue
on its present course? Or should we be leading the world into
the soon coming Kingdom of God’s pure theocracy! I would
say the answer is obvious.
